Chapter Twelve

Kingdom Of Aquaria

My eyes drifted open, and I had no idea where I was. It was bright, and the air smelled different. My head lolled to the side, looking at a wide-open room with lavish furnishings in blue and silver. Sea shells in many sizes and shapes adorned a table, while the floor was a material that was the same color as sand.

Aquaria.

I shot up, my brain whirling.

“She’s awake,” a youthful female voice declared.

Blinking a few times, a pretty girl came into focus. She looked no older than ten with long, bluish-silver hair, and the same lambent ice-blue eyes as Kai.

“Princess Calla. You’re awake,” she chimed, stepping to the side of my bed and curtseying.

I smiled and stretched my achy arms over my head. “You must be Kai’s sister.”

“I am.” A smile lit up on her dainty, pale face. “How did you know?”

“He told me all about you.” My voice was gravelly, and my entire body throbbed. Why? How long had I been sleeping? I slid my legs to the side of the bed and tried to stand, but they were too weak and unsteady.

“Be careful,” she stated. “You’re probably weak because you’ve been asleep for five days.”

What?

Sabine entered the room and quickly shuffled toward me, accompanied by Thalia.

“Praise the goddess,” Sabine exhaled, taking my hands. “We thought you’d never wake up.”

I rubbed my aching temples. “Was I really asleep for five days?”

Thalia plopped into an armchair nearby. “You were, but after that display of power, it doesn’t surprise me.” She shook her head. “Through tales, I have only learned of one Incendian royal who was given wings by the goddess. I never dreamed I would witness such an incredible sight. You were amazing,” she said.

“You really were, Calla.” Sabine patted my hand, an expression of wonder in her eyes.

I rubbed my temples. “I can’t believe the queen. How could she hate me so much to call the freaking devil himself?”

“It’s not hard to believe,” Thalia said. “She hated you the moment you walked into the throne room and presented her your marks. Couldn’t you see it?”

“I could,” I sighed. “I just wanted to give her the benefit of the doubt.”

Kai and Markus entered the room next.

My eyes instantly looked past them, but Trystan wasn’t there. Maybe he decided to go back to Carpathia with his cadre.

“Don’t worry. Prince Trystan is still here with his men.” Kai said with a grin. “I’ve already sent someone to tell them you’re up.”

Kai made his way over to me and I almost didn’t recognize him. His hair was drawn back at the nape of his neck. He was wearing long black slacks with a long white tunic embellished with blue and silver gems with Aquaria’s crest on the front.

He held up both hands as he neared me. “I know what you’re thinking. Don’t judge me. My parents make it mandatory that I dress the part when I’m home.”

I smirked. “You look . . . well, you look like a prince.”

He crossed his arms over his chest and grunted.
